You might have heard of the importance of checking your child’s teeth when they get their first one or by their first birthday, but have you heard about the 3-year check?
The 3-year check is simply a routine dental appointment around the time your child turns three that represents a key milestone within your child’s dental health. This visit is particularly relevant because your child’s full set of baby teeth is in place and a lot can be happening beneath the surface.
Why age three is such an important milestone
Three is a turning point for little teeth. A few things line up at once:
The full set is through: Most children have all 20 baby teeth by around age three. That means there are now back molars to keep an eye on, especially in the grooves and contact points where decay loves to hide.
Diets get riskier: Toddlers move on to more solid foods, snacks, and sweet treats. More frequent sugar means more chances for decay, and early childhood tooth decay is one of the most common reasons young children end up needing treatment.
Habits are setting: Brushing routines, thumb-sucking, prolonged bottle or cup use, and snacking patterns are all forming now. A dentist can spot what’s helping and what’s storing up trouble. A good paediatric dentist can also guide your little one in how to brush their teeth properly.

What happens during the check?
A good paediatric check-up at this age is gentle, quick, and often surprisingly fun for your child. Typically, the dentist will:
- Count and examine each tooth for early signs of decay
- Check the gums, bite, and how the jaw is developing
- Look at how baby teeth are positioned and spaced
- Talk you through brushing technique, fluoride toothpaste amounts, and diet
- Apply preventive care such as fluoride varnish where appropriate
- Answer your questions about teething, dummies, thumb-sucking, or fussy eating
- Pick up on any signs of developmental issues such as hypoplasia/ poor enamel, missing teeth, crowding
- Just as importantly, it gives your child a calm, familiar experience in the chair, so future visits feel easy.
What happens if you miss it?
While skipping the check around age three rarely causes an obvious problem straight away, there might be some challenges that could develop into more serious issues. Some of the challenges that can be prevented with the 3-year check are:
1. Decay progresses. Early decay is often painless and hidden between the back teeth. Caught early, it can sometimes be reversed or managed simply. Left alone, it can reach the nerve and lead to pain, infection, or an abscess.
2. Small fixes become big ones. A spot that needed a little fluoride and advice could become a filling, or, in more advanced cases, an extraction, sometimes under general anaesthetic.
3. Sleep, eating, and growth suffer. Toothache and infection can affect how well a young child eats and sleeps, which matters at an age when they’re growing fast.
4. Spacing problems appear later. If a baby molar is lost too early to decay, neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, crowding the adult tooth that’s meant to come through. This can sometimes set up the need for orthodontics down the line.
5. Dental anxiety takes root. A child whose first real appointment happens because something already hurts is far more likely to associate the dentist with discomfort.
